Trip planner help

The Trip planner helps you to plan travel on train, bus, ferry, light rail and school buses up to a month in advance.

To access all the features of the website we suggest using the latest versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer.

You can plan your trip using a number of tools:

  • Trip planner - enter your 'from' and 'to' locations for complete A to B trip planning
  • Next departures - enter a 'from' location to see the next scheduled services for that location
  • Text only planning - trip planner and next departures without images or maps.
  • Interactive map – create a trip plan or search for next departures via a map.
  • Timetables and maps search – find a timetable or map for a specific route or download a pdf network map.

Trip planner

To plan a trip enter a 'From' or origin location and a ‘To’ destination in the search fields.

A list of suggested locations will appear as you type. The more you type, the more accurate these suggestions will become.

Select the closest match.

Ways to build and create a trip plan

You can create a trip plan using:

  • a train station name, ferry wharf, stop name or transit stop number (e.g. 200064
  • a street number, street name and suburb (e.g. 6 Main St Smithfield)
  • a street name and suburb (e.g. Main St Smithfield)
  • a suburb name only (e.g. Smithfield)
  • a landmark or point of interest (e.g. Sydney Opera House or State Library)

Trip plans using suburb only will take you to/from the geographic centre of the suburb.

If your location has multiple matches, a pop up alert will ask you to choose an option from a list of possible suggestions.

Travel on a specific date or time

You can create a trip plan up to 14 days in advance.

Enter the date of your trip, and select either:

  • ‘leave after’ – for trips that start after the time specified
  • ‘arrive before’ – for trips that arrive at the destination before the time specified

The time is defaulted to the current time (now) of your search rounded to the nearest 5 minutes. You can change this using the hours and minutes drop down lists.

Additional information

We use 24-hour time. See What’s the 24-hour clock.

Some results might show a trip plan that leaves earlier than the time you have selected because the trip is quicker and/or has fewer changes than other options.

You cannot choose a time or date in the past.


Click the 'Go' button to run the search and see trip plan results.

To see results for a trip in the opposite direction, select “reverse trip” at the top of the trip plan summary options and select ‘go’ to get your results.

Helpful hints:

If a house number is not found, use the closest match.

If the streets are near a suburb boundary, it may be better not to include a suburb name, e.g. Eddy Ave (near Central station) is in Haymarket and not Sydney.

Landmarks in the system include hospitals, shopping centres, cemeteries, educational institutions (e.g. schools, universities, TAFE campuses etc.), places of worship, parks, swimming pools, sporting venues, and attractions (e.g. Luna Park, Sydney Opera House, Bondi Beach).

Bus stops are numbered, by suburb. The first four digits correspond to its postcode. For example, bus stop 200715 (Harris St near Broadway, Ultimo) corresponds to an Ultimo postcode (2007).

Setting search preferences

You can select any combination of transport services from train, bus, ferry, light rail or school bus.

Train, bus, ferry and light rail services are selected by default.

For best results, keep all transport modes selected. This will ensure that trackwork bus replacement information and NightRide buses are displayed in your trip plan results.

For regional coaches, keep Train mode selected as these services are part of by NSW TrainLink.

Mobility options

You can tick the checkbox for Accessible services only to limit results to routes/stops that are accessible. See Accessible travel in NSW

Walk speed – The default walking speed is 4km/hour. You can choose to decrease walking speed (2km/hour) or increase walking speed (6km/hour). If you are travelling with luggage, we suggest reducing the walking speed.

Trip preferences

Fastest trips (default) – returns trips in order of the earliest arrival time (for ‘leave after’) or latest arrival time (for ‘arrive before’)

Fewest changes – returns trip plans with the least possible transfers between services. These trips may take longer.

Least walking – keeps walking to a minimum, but this will depend on the availability of nearby public transport services and the walk limit you’ve set.

To or from transport

Walk – select this option to get walking directions to and from public transport services. The default walking time is 20 minutes. You can increase this time to a maximum of 60 minutes. When a stop cannot be found within the specified walking time, trip plan results may default to show driving options instead.

Taxi/Drive - provides trip options for driving to and from a station or interchange to connect with public transport. The default driving time is 30 minutes. Driving directions are provided in results.

Trip plan results

Your trip options are listed in summary view.

Each option shows the departure, arrival and travel times, the icons for the transport combinations that make up your trip (train, bus, ferry, light rail, walk) with the route number or ID underneath so you can identify the services in your results. See Key to icons and line colours

A wheelchair icon will be visible in the summary view to indicate if the trip is accessible. To review the detailed itinerary of each trip plan, select the option or ‘+’ icon beside each option.

To open all options at once, click ‘Expand all’.

To look at earlier departure times, click ‘Earlier’. To see later departure times, click ‘Later’ at the bottom of the summary options.

Use the 'Share’ link to share your results. Copy and paste the link to send it to others.

To do a return trip, click ‘Return trip’ and click ‘Go’ or start a new search by clicking ‘New search’ .


Opal is the electronic ticketing system used across the Sydney metropolitan and outer-metropolitan area.

Approximate Adult Opal fares are displayed in trip plan results where Opal is accepted.

Click on the displayed fare to open a pop up window showing the approximate fare for other Opal card types.

If your trip involves travel on Opal enabled and non-enabled services, then the Opal fare will be displayed with a '+' to indicate other fares are payable, e.g. $4.50+.

If a trip involves a single service that is not Opal enabled, then 'Opal not available' is displayed.

Some services may require advance booking.

Reading a trip plan

Expand a trip plan to see a detailed itinerary for each trip.

Each plan is divided into colour-coded segments based on transport type (walk/drive/taxi, train, coach, bus, ferry, light rail).

Each segment shows

  • departure and arrival times
  • an icon indicating mode of transport. See Key to icons and line colours
  • departure and arrival locations
  • type of transport, including related information specific to mode of transport
    • Drive/taxi or walk segments – shows approximate time and distance. The ‘Show directions’ link displays turn by turn instructions for these modes of transport.
    • Train and coach segments – shows line and destination.
    • Ferry and light rail segments – shows line and direction name.
    • Bus segments – shows route number, direction name and operator name.
  • ‘View stop sequence’ will display a sequential list of stops along that let of the trip
    • Train, Coach, Ferry and Light Rail trip legs show stops by station and suburb
    • Bus trip legs show stop names, suburbs and transit stop numbers (TSN)
  • wheelchair icon – if displayed next to the line/route name indicates the service is accessible
  • map link/icon – click to open the segment on an interactive map
  • approximate Opal fare (Adult) for Opal-enabled services OR an "Opal not available' on services that are not Opal-enabled.

Use the 'Print' link at the top right of each option or use the ‘Print’ option in your browser to print all expanded results.

Interactive map

The map image shown top right of the plan your trip page displays a visual outline of the selected trip on a map. Option one is shown by default.

Click the map to open a full screen display showing the entire route on a map. In expanded trip mode, clicking the map icon will open a full screen map, display zoomed to that specific trip segment.

You can trip plan directly from the map.

Plan a trip

To remove the current locations, right click the ‘From’ or ‘To’ icons on the map or click the ‘x’ next to the ‘From’ or ‘To’ locations in the ‘Plan you trip’ box. To set your new location(s), right click anywhere on the map.

Click ‘Go’ to generate a new trip plan using these locations.

Entering just a ‘From’ location and clicking ‘Go’, will generate a Next departures search.

Navigating maps

The arrows and zoom bar in the top left corner allow you to navigate around the map.

Use (-) to zoom out for an overview of the whole trip.

Use (+) to zoom in for a closer look at your trip. When zoomed in, an icon box will appear in the top right corner. If the ‘Show on map’ checkbox is ticked, additional icons will show on the map showing:

  • Stops (e.g. train stations, bus/coach stops, ferry wharves and light rail stops)
  • Opal card/ticket outlets
  • Points of interest (e.g. hospitals, schools, churches, landmarks, etc.)

Use your mouse and hover over them for additional information.

With the exception of the icon box, you can move any of the boxes around your screen.

To close any map, click the cross ‘X’ icon in the top right corner.

Next departures

Use Next departures to view the next services that are scheduled to depart from a specific location.

Enter your ‘From’ location, adjust the date and time and click ‘Go’.

The same rules apply for what you can enter in the trip planner fields and autosuggest.

You can filter your results by transport mode (train, bus, coach, ferry, light rail or school bus).

You can also ‘Filter by route’, using drop down menu. Check all the services you would like to see in the results and then click the ‘Go’ button to the right of the drop down menu.

Results are displayed by departure time, showing the following information:

  • the scheduled departure time
  • an icon for the type of transport. See Key to icons and line colours.
  • route number and direction/destination
  • a wheelchair icon next to line/route to indicate accessible services
  • the ‘From’ location.
  • Transit Stop Number (TSN) or platform number.
  • disruption alerts and additional information where applicable
  • interactive map icon - click to view the route map of each service, with your ‘from’ location marked.

Note: If you used an address/point of interest as your search term, the results will show next departures from all stops nearby. For example, searching next departures from Sydney Opera House will show a list of results that include ferry wharves, train platforms and bus stands, plus the walking time to each stop.

Navigating maps

The arrows and zoom bar in the top left corner allow you to navigate around the map. The + allows you to zoom in and the - lets you zoom out.

  • Zoom out for an overview of the whole trip.
  • Zoom in for a closer look at your trip and to see stops (train stations, bus stops, ferry wharves and light rail stops), ticket outlets and points of interest (hospitals, schools, churches, landmarks, etc).

When zoomed in, an icon box will appear in the top right corner.  Click the icons to view a list of nearby stops, points of interest (POI) or ticket outlets.  If the ‘Show on map’ checkbox is ticked, icons display on the map, which show additional information when you use your mouse over them.

With the exception of the icon box, you can move any of the boxes around your screen.

Trip planning from the map

To remove the current locations, right click the ‘From’ or ‘To’ icons on the map or click the ‘x’ next to the ‘From’ or ‘To’ locations in the trip planner box.  To set your new location(s), right click anywhere on the map.  Clicking the ‘Go’ button will generate a new trip plan using these locations.

Note:  Entering just a ‘From’ location and clicking Go, will generate a Next departures search.

To close any map, click the cross ‘X’ icon in the top right corner.

Text only planning

If you’re having trouble using the trip planner, use the text only trip planner or text only next departures.

To locate the text only versions, go to Plan your trip or Next departures and select the “text only” link to the right of the ‘Plan your trip’ heading.

The text only version will give you the same trip plan options as the graphic version, but does not include images or maps.
