Concession fares for tertiary students

    Information note

    Proof of entitlement cards for tertiary students are changing from 1 April 2017.

    The green Tertiary Student Concession Cards and foil stickers (described below) will no longer be accepted after 31 March 2017. They will be replaced by a new proof of entitlement – the Transport Concession Entitlement Card.

    • For travel within the Opal network, tertiary students will require one of the following (in conjunction with their Concession Opal card):
      • An Approved Form of Student ID Card; or
      • A Transport Concession Entitlement Card
    • For travel in regional NSW (outside the Opal network), tertiary students will require the following (in conjunction with a paper ticket):
      • A Transport Concession Entitlement Card

    Overview

    If you are enrolled as a full-time tertiary student at an accredited NSW tertiary institution, you may be eligible for concession fares on public transport in NSW.

    You must carry your NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card or your Student ID card when travelling on a concession fare as proof of entitlement or you may be fined.

    Sydney and surrounding areas – Opal network

    With a Concession Opal card and a NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card or a Student ID card, you pay:

    • Concession fares on trains, buses, most ferries and light rail.
    • $7.50 daily with the Opal travel cap. This does not include the Sydney Airport station access fee.

    Without a Concession Opal card and a NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card or a Student ID card, you are required to pay for and travel with an Adult fare.

    You are not entitled to travel with a Child/Youth Opal card or Child/Youth Opal single trip tickets or Opal single bus tickets.

    Regional NSW – outside Opal network

    If you are travelling outside the Opal network, you will need a Transport Concession foil sticker affixed to your NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card or Student ID card as proof of entitlement.

    With a NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card or a Student ID card, you pay concession fares on regular local bus services and on all NSW TrainLink Regional services.

    NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card

    You may be eligible to apply for a NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card, if you are enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited NSW tertiary institution.

    International tertiary students are generally not entitled to concession fares in NSW.

    Please note: A Transport Concession foil sticker must be affixed to your student card when travelling outside the Opal network.

    How to apply

    NSW Tertiary Student Concession Cards are issued free of charge and are valid until 31 March 2017, unless you are no longer enrolled as a full-time student. They are issued in accordance with the NSW Tertiary Student concessions guidelines.


    Sydney and surrounding areas - Opal network

    Opal is an electronic ticketing system used on public transport in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter, Illawarra and Southern Highlands.

    Inside the Opal network, if you are a tertiary student, you can travel with one of these tickets:

    • Concession Opal card
    • Adult Opal card
    • Adult Opal single trip ticket or Opal single bus ticket

    You are not entitled to travel with a Child/Youth Opal card, Child/Youth Opal single trip tickets or Opal single bus tickets.

    How to get your Concession Opal card

    If you have a NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card or a Student ID card and you are a full-time NSW tertiary student enrolled in a participating NSW tertiary institution, you are eligible for a Concession Opal card.

    Travelling on your Concession Opal card

    You must carry these cards when you travel:

     Tertiary student ID card and Concession Opal card

    or

     Tertiary student concession card and Concession Opal card

    If you do not have your Concession Opal card and proof of entitlement, you will need to pay for and travel with an Adult fare, or you may be fined.

    Travelling to and from Sydney Airport train stations

    • With your Concession Opal card and proof of entitlement, you are entitled to a Concession Sydney Airport station access fee.
    • Without your Concession Opal card and proof of entitlement, you are required to pay the Adult Sydney Airport station access fee.

    Opal card, single trip tickets and fares


    Regional NSW - outside Opal network

    If you have a valid NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card or your Student ID card with a Transport Concession foil sticker affixed, you are entitled to:

    • Concession fares on privately-operated regular route local bus services.
    • Concession fares on all NSW TrainLink Regional services.
    • Concession fares when you travel on interstate train services.

    Please note: Concessions do not apply when booking sleeping berths.

    A Transport Concession foil sticker is required if you are travelling in regional NSW on concession fares. You can apply for a foil sticker at your tertiary institution.

    Privately owned and operated services may not offer concession travel for NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card holders. Check with local transport operators before you travel.


    Exceptions

    Concessions are not available on fast ferry services between Manly and Circular Quay, event shuttles buses, chartered bus services and Great Southern Rail.
