Concession fares for NSW war widows or widowers

    Overview

    If you have a NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card, you are entitled to concession fares on public transport in NSW.

    You must carry your NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card when travelling on a concession fare as proof of entitlement, or you may be fined.

    Sydney and surrounding areas – Opal network

    With a Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card and NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card, you pay: 

    • Concession fares on trains, buses, most ferries and light rail.
    • $2.50 daily with the Opal travel cap. This does not include the Sydney Airport station access fee. 

    Without a Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card and NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card, you are required to travel with an Adult Opal card or an Adult Opal single trip ticket or Opal single bus tickets.

    Regional NSW – outside Opal network

    With a NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card, you pay:

    NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card

    You are eligible to apply for a NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card, if you meet the following criteria:

    • You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
    • You reside permanently in NSW.
    • You are the widow, widower or partner of a member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) whose death was related to active service, and you receive a war widow’s pension from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), or a deceased ADF member and who has been compensated under subsection 234(1) of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (Cwlth) and the member’s death was related to overseas warlike or non-warlike service (see: Definition).

    Warlike and non-warlike service is as defined in the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation (Warlike Service) Determination 2012 (No.1) and the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation (Non-warlike Service) Determination 2012 (No. 2) made under 6(1)(a) of theMilitary Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (Cwlth) and any subsequent Determinations made under that part.

    NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Cards are issued free of charge by the Department of Veterans' Affairs and are valid for 12 months until 31 December each year.


    Sydney and surrounding areas – Opal network

    Opal is an electronic ticketing system used on public transport in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter, Illawarra and Southern Highlands.

    Inside the Opal network, if you are a NSW war widow or widower, you can travel with one of these tickets:

    • Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card
    • Adult Opal card
    • Adult Opal single trip tickets or Opal single bus ticket

    How to get your Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card

    If you have a NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card, you are eligible for a Gold Senior/ Pensioner Opal card.

    Apply on the Opal website or call 13 67 25 (13 OPAL).

    Travelling with your Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card

    You must carry these two cards when you travel:

    NSW War Widow/er Concession Card and Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card

    If you do not have your Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card and proof of entitlement, you are required to pay for and travel with an Adult fare, or you may be fined.

    Travelling to and from Sydney Airport train stations

    • With your Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card and proof of entitlement, you are entitled to a Concession Sydney Airport station access fee.
    • Without your Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card and proof of entitlement, you are required to pay the Adult Sydney Airport station access fee.

    Regional NSW - outside Opal network

    If you have a NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card, you are entitled to concession fares on privately-operated regular route local bus services and on all NSW TrainLink Regional services.

    This includes:

    You also receive four single or two return free journeys on NSW TrainLink Regional services within NSW each calendar year (booking fees apply for first class travel).

    Please note: Concessions do not apply when booking sleeping berths.

    Other privately owned and operated services may offer concessions at their own discretion. Check with local transport operators before you travel.


    Exceptions

    Concessions are not available on fast ferry services between Manly and Circular Quay, event shuttle buses, chartered bus services and Great Southern Rail services.


    Replacement cards

    • NSW War Widow/er Transport Concession Card: Contact Centrelink or the Department of Veterans' Affairs for a card replacement free of charge.
    • Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card: Call 13 67 25 (13 OPAL). A replacement fee may apply.
