Trip planner results

Transport for NSW undertook customer research to improve the trip planner.  This research showed  improvements were needed for the summary and detail trip planning information.

The summary results provide a quick glance of the types of transport for a trip (including T for Train, B for Bus, F for Ferry, L for Light rail), how many interchanges there are in this trip and if there are any disruptions (shown with an alert symbol).

Clicking on the summary options provides full details including which public transport services to catch, platform/stop numbers, walking/driving options, how long each option will take, the stops between your start and end points, and details of any disruptions to services.  Maps are also provided for the whole trip and individual components of a trip.

The trip plan summary and details use simplified letters, colours and codes for each type of transport to help customers better navigate from one transport mode to another.  The codes are T for Train, B for Bus, F for Ferry and L for light rail. Train and ferry lines also have codes for each line (for example T1, T2, F1, F2). 

Alternatively, also offers a text-only trip planner, which provides all the information you need for your trip without images.  Go to to use the text-only trip planner or Next departures tool.  The text-only trip planner may present the trip planning information in a way more suited to the technology you are using.

24-hour clock

The 24-hour clock is the standard clock system used around the world. It is also the international standard notation of time. This international standard has been adopted for the website and printed timetables. Further information on the 24-hour clock can be found at


The website provides timetables for train, bus, ferry and light rail services.  To access a timetable go to the Maps & timetables page, and select the tab for the timetable you need.

To generate a bus timetable, type the bus route you are looking for in the box and select the route displayed in the drop down list.  Then select the route direction and click ‘Find timetable’.  To generate a train or ferry timetable select from the drop down list and click ‘Find timetable’.

We also suggest using the Trip planner or Next departures tool to help you plan your train, bus, ferry or light rail trip.  Next departures provides trip details of the next train, bus, ferry or light rail departures from a nominated area.  To use Next departures click on Maps & timetables in the main horizontal navigation at the top of this page.  When on the Maps & timetables page, use the Next departures blue box to enter your ‘From’ location.  Both the Trip planner and Next departure tools are available on the mobile website,
